About PDUB

PDUB PRODUCTIONS is an innovative youth media + civic engagement program through which local youth create digital content about Historic Filipinotown (Hi Fi) for distribution on multiple platforms: interactive Mobile Hi Fi Tours; HyperCities, an online, map-based time-travel application; and a street-level multimedia installation at Pilipino Workers’ Center’s new building.

Though Filipinos are the largest Asian population in the city of Los Angeles, the community and its issues are often overlooked. Designated in 2002, Historic Filipinotown (“Hi Fi” or “P-Town”) has few cultural or physical markers to indicate the area’s status. It is better known for its proximity to the 101 Freeway and as shortcut to downtown than as a cultural nexus. Historic Filipinotown is ethnically and culturally diverse, with Filipinos comprising 20% of the population and Latinos the largest group.

PDUB PRODUCTIONS ADDRESSES SEVERAL COMMUNITY NEEDS: building a sustainable digital media program for resource-poor neighborhood youth; engaging local youth to create content about Historic Filipinotown’s character, history and significance; convening an inclusive multi-generational, cross-sector coalition of neighborhood stakeholders; and enhancing the neighborhood’s visibility and foot-traffic. It uses digital technology in a creative, educational, innovative and participatory manner, and advances ongoing efforts to benefit the community-at-large.24_PDUB_Youth7_Creative_License

FOR LOCAL YOUTH: HANDS-ON, PARTICIPATORY LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

22_PDUB_Youth1

Beyond providing youth with digital media skills, PDUB Productions aims to build a greater sense of community through civic participation. Media production about Historic Filipinotown becomes the vehicle for connecting youth to their neighborhood –its history, local stakeholders, community resources; its distribution through the Mobile Hi Fi Tours and HyperCities the means of increasing public awareness and visitors to the area. On a deeper level, PDUB seeks to evolve among participating youth and the community-at-large a heightened sense of belonging, ownership and continued investment in Historic Filipinotown.

PDUB Productions is unique in its depth, scope and the potential of its reach and community impact. Its comprehensive hands-on curriculum emphasizes the connection between media production and community benefit, combining neighborhood and cultural history, community journalism, interactive tour design, audio and video production. PDUB Youth participate in a range of activities that strengthen confidence, creativity, leadership skills and civic awareness. They interview guest speakers about neighborhood history, Filipinos in Los Angeles and community activism.

PDUB Youth created tons of content. A computer monitor doesn’t do them justice. At our recent June 6th, 2009 Youth Screening, each PDUB Student received an official Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Los Angeles in recognition of their work on behalf of Historic Filipinotown, courtesy of Council President Eric Garcetti (CD-13).

It was a shock for Christopher Rivera, a long-term resident of Echo Park, to find out that he in fact lives in Historic Filipinotown. While describing his favorite spot in the neighborhood, Christopher talks about the diversity of the area and what the term “Historic Filipinotown” means to him.
